A number of assumptions were made before carrying out the 31/08/13 survey :
1. Many animals that have been killed over the previous twelve months can no longer be observed. This is because they have either been removed (probably more common in residential areas) or have been pressed so much into the road by high volume and fast moving traffic that they can no longer be observed. This is based on anecdotal observations of diminishing / vanishing corpses. (These anecdotal observations will be subject to future research and validation.)
2. Any animals discovered on or beside a road was a victim of road kill (unless there are clear signs that it had been attacked).
3. Any animals observed on the road or by the road side has been killed within the last year. Assumption 1 supports this.
4. Any dead animals discovered are the minimum number of animals that have been killed in the last twelve months. Assumption 1 supports this.
